Thought of the Week with thanks to Yehuda Gottleib.

The book of Vayikra describes in great detail the temple service and the specifics of offering sacrifices. These sacrifices are brought for various purposes and are usually named for the action a person is trying to achieve. For example – a sin offering is called a chatat and an offering of gratitude is called a todah.

The second verse in Vayikra states that a person must bring this sacrifice “from himself”.The commentator Seforno states that this is not only meant to be a literal command, but also a spiritual one as well. That is, not only should the korban come from his own means, but also from deep within his own feelings.

If only the actions of the korban are undertaking, with no internal thought or teshuva from the owner then it is not an offering that will be accepted by Hashem.
