Thought of the Week with thanks to Rabbi Dovid Gutnick. A fierce debate raged in the city of Chelm: Which is greater, the sun or the moon? Finally the wisest of Chelm’s sages stood up, and, as silence fell upon the masses, wisely proclaimed: ‘Of course the moon is greater, why the sun shines when it is broad daylight ‘

It has been said that everything you need to know about life can be learnt from the stories of the wise men of Chelm.

It is easy to shine brighter than the firmament when the going is good. But when there is darkness, thick and putrid, and a little illumination shines forth by way of a mitzvah, a kind word or a good deed, we are truly achieving greatness.

This is a timely reflection entering into a Shabbat whose goodness and illumination dispels the gloom of Tishah b’Av causing it to be postponed to Sunday. We hope, that on account of our luminous actions, it be dispelled entirely.
