Thought of the Week with thanks to David Prins. This week’s Torah portion tells of a failed rebellion, which is led by Korach. Korach does not seek leadership because he genuinely believes he can give the people a better future. Rather, he is interested only in his own honour. He wants to be master of the people, not a public servant. He has no manifesto. His electioneering seeks simply to criticise and scoff at the current leadership. This model of campaigning sadly ended with Korach’s demise. We witness such negative campaigns all too frequently. We must be constantly on our guard against supporting those seemingly charismatic wannabees who offer nothing positive, and whose agenda starts and ends with their own grandeur.
