Thought of the Week with thanks to Avi Teleki. A simple request with disastrous consequences: Moses asked twelve Jews to produce a report on Israel. They returned with much more than that. True, they did what they asked, however they went beyond their scope and drew conclusions that were uncalled for. It is precisely this point that they were punished for.
G-d wants us to understand what we are doing, after all, we all said “we will do, and then we will understand” just last week. However when we forget about the first phrase, we will do, we will also lack the second phrase, the understanding. The lesson is that we all need the foundational belief of G-d and His Torah and this should resonate with all our actions, for a lack of this basis, results in wrong outcomes. May we all take this lesson to heart and build the right foundation in order to get to the right conclusions.
