Thought of the Week with thanks to Yudi New. In this week’s Torah reading, G-d directs Moshe to carve two cherubs arising from the cover of the Holy Ark.

“Their wings shall be spread upwards….with their faces turned to one another.”

These instructions go beyond aesthetics. The design features teach us that, like the cherubs’ wings, a Jew must focus his attention heavenward – to reach for the Divine. However, one must never avert their gaze from their peers and always remain sensitive to their earthly reality and struggles.

The Ark housed the two tablets given at Sinai which are divided equally between G-d and peer focussed commandments. Each of the cherubs covered and corresponded directly to each of the tablets. This reinforces that neither relationship is paramount and we must always balance our energies equally between our peers and G-d.

Wishing everyone a Shabbat Shalom and Happy Adar!
