Thought of the Week with thanks to Isaac Balbin. In this week’s Torah portion of Beshalach, we read in that in respect of the gathering of the sustenance of Manna from Heaven “whoever gathered much did not have more, and whoever gathered little did not have less”. In contradistinction, in Bamidbar, when gathering the sustenance of quails, our ancestors were somewhat crazed in their hoarding and accumulation. During times of need, especially when one’s health and survival are challenged, the natural tendency is to hoard and accumulate under the assumption that man can prevent and safeguard through self idealisation.
Rav Soloveitchik explains that the Manna description gives voice to the futility of man’s overestimation of the importance of economic wealth to his survival. Indeed, are we not witnessing a rude awakening of this dichotomy through the ruinous COVID playbook?
