Thought of the Week with thanks to Rafi Goodman. The week’s Torah reading recounts how our forefather Yaakov returned back to Canaan – “shalem” in Hebrew– meaning complete and intact.

Yaakov had recovered from his injury he sustained while wrestling with Esav’s guardian angel; materially too his flocks had replenished from what he had given to Esav, and spiritually he had not forgotten the Torah that that he studied prior to becoming Lavan’s employee, despite the drain on his time due to working.

Yaakov’s safe travel and return to the Promised Land foreshadows our own historical journey through the ages and our imminent redemption. Just as Yaakov returned with health, wealth and knowledge, so too we shall succeed.

Our involvement in this physical world and efforts to earn a living should not mean we cannot dedicate ourselves to Torah properly, due to lack of time. By doing our best in all these areas, G-d grants us the resources to arrive “intact” in the Holy Land with the coming of Moshiach, may it happen speedily in our days.
