Spectators at the Boxing Day Test between Australia and New Zealand received Chanukah greetings on the scoreboard. This is the first time Cricket Australia has sent a Chanukah message to the Jewish cricket fans across the globe. It was arranged by David Werdiger, JBD President Rabbi Dovid Gutnick of the East Melbourne Hebrew Congregation, affectionately dubbed “Rabbi of the MCG”.
The message was beamed at the start of the match to the surprise and thrill of many, and was covered in local Jewish media.
Chanukah coincides with Boxing Day about every three year. David Werdiger told J-Wire: “We were so thrilled to see it up on the big screen for all to see, and received lots of positive feedback from those who saw it! We are also very grateful to Cricket Australia for doing it.”
