Thought of the Week with thanks to Rabbi James Kennard. “Terach took Avraham . . . and they went with him from Ur Casdim to go to the land of Cana’an and they came to Charan and stayed there” (Bereishit 11:31). When Avraham journeyed the wording is strikingly similar: “Avraham took . . . and they went to go to the land of Cana’an and they came to the land of Cana’an” (Bereishit 12:5). The Torah points us to the contrast between the failure of Terach to reach his destination and Avraham’s success. But there is also hope. In this case, as in so many others throughout history, a parent does not complete a task for themselves, but can take comfort when it is completed by the next generation. In our times, the journey is often precisely the same as Terach’s; if the parents do not realise their dream of making aliya, it is often their children who do.
