Thought of the Week with thanks to Ezra May. Rashi writes (Genesis 28:11) that before going to sleep, Yaakov took the practical steps of placing stones around his head to protect himself because he was afraid that he might be attacked by wild animals.

However if Yaakov was really concerned of a potential animal attack, why was he satisfied that the small stones he placed around his head – which would almost certainly be ineffective in the event of a real attack – would protect him.

The commentator Darkei HaShleimus explains that a person who truly trusts in G-d understands that after he has done all that he realistically can in a certain situation, then the outcome is transferred to G-d and there is no reason to worry further. In Yaakov’s case, although the small rocks around his head offered inadequate protection, they were all that were available. So once Yaakov had done all that he could, he was then able to go to sleep comfortably confident that he was now fully under G-d’s protection.
