Thought of the Week with thanks to David Prins. This week’s Torah reading discusses the physical manifestation in houses, garments and human bodies of spiritual malaise caused by speaking gossip. The simple lesson of the Torah is to behave properly in the first place so as to avoid one’s innermost character defects being put on public display.
Nowadays, the physical manifestation of spiritual malaise no longer occurs in the precise form set out in the Torah. Rather, the underlying inappropriate, unethical, immoral or simply illegal behaviour of individuals and of institutions comes out through WikiLeaks, whistle blowers, Royal Commissions, and others who expose that which the perpetrators would rather keep hidden. The message today is the same. All of us must understand that we are accountable both to the One Above and to society at large here on earth. We would all be well advised to take the advice of Psalm 34: “He who desires life, who loves days of seeing good, should guard his tongue from evil, and his lips from speaking deceit. Turn from evil and do good, seek peace and pursue it”.
