Thought of the Week with thanks to Rafi Goodman. This week’s Parsha – Lech Lecha – describes how G-d chose Avram to be the father of the Jewish people. Although he was chosen because of his great qualities and abilities, G-d still insisted that Avram undergo a series of tests in order to prepare him for being the first patriarch of the “Chosen People”.
G-d’s first command to Avram was “Go Forth” – the literal translation is “go to you”. Just as we are all descendants of Avram and members of the nation that he founded, G-d’s initial instruction to Avram is also our initiation into Jewish life. Every Jew must know that the very first thing that G-d commands him/her to do is “Go to you” – return and connect to the real you, to your essence and spiritual core, and then we can all “Go Forth” and shine as Jews.
