Thought of the Week with thanks to  David Prins. In this week’s Torah reading, Moshe’s father-in-law Yitro advises Moshe that it is too much for Moshe to judge the people alone. He proposes that Moshe should appoint a team of judges to share the burdens of the task. These judges are also proposed to be leaders of the people. They are role models, as well as functioning judges operating in a professional legal capacity.

The characteristics that Yitro set for these leaders / judges were that they should be men of accomplishment, G-d fearing people, men of truth, people who despise money. Sadly today, too many people choose role models who they “idolise” on the basis of their sporting prowess, and physical appearance and fitness. Then they are surprised when these people let them down through match fixing, drug taking, and other inappropriate behaviours. As a society and as individuals, we should reacquaint ourselves with Yitro’s criteria for worthiness to be true role models.
