Thought of the Week with thanks to Rafi Goodman. This week’s Parsha has multiple references to earning a livelihood and donating a portion of that money as Tzedaka (charity). We all know the hard work we put in to earn a living. By the same token we must keep in mind that our efforts are not the only cause of our material success, but they are only a vessel to contain Hashem’s blessing. In this context, our main concern should be with making ourselves worthy of receiving Hashem’s blessing for success. Interestingly, the Hebrew words for “tithe” and “becoming wealthy” are very similar, alluding to the fact that those that give charity are rewarded with abundant wealth. In addition, when we resolve to give charity beyond our natural means, Hashem grants us the wealth that is required in order for us to give the charity we have resolved to donate.
