Thought of the Week with thanks to Gaby SilverThe world appears to have forgotten lessons of the past. Global anti-Semitism has reached the worst levels since 1945. How are we to respond to this palpable threat? On the verse “In the abundance of Your grandeur, You devastate Your opponents”, sung after the parting of the Red Sea, Rashi comments that those who rise against the Jews are directly attacking Hashem.

The divine response is implied in the previous verse: “Your right hand, G-d”, majestic in might; Your right hand, G-d”, crushes the enemy”. The curious double phraseology intimates that in defence of His Children, Hashem’s “left hand”, (attribute of judgement and might) evolves into a second “right hand”, (mercy, kindness), The Mechilta explains that the Jews were on the verge of annihilation along with their erstwhile oppressors. Their faith in advancing into the sea prior to its splitting transformed that judgement to benevolence. That same supreme faith and trust in G-d is needed to combat our present day Pharaohs, and bring about the ultimate revelation of G-dliness, may it happen immediately.
